   Mr. McDermott, and Mr. Honda) submitted the following concurrent 
   resolution; which was referred to the Committee on International 


                         CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

Recognizing the need to double Federal funding for the Peace Corps from 
fiscal year 2002 funding levels to $550,000,000 by 2007, and for other 

Whereas on January 29, 2002, the President proposed to double the number of 
        Peace Corps volunteers to almost 15,000 by 2007;
Whereas, since 1961, more than 168,000 volunteers have served in the Peace Corps 
        in 136 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Central Asia, Eastern 
        and Central Europe, and Central and South America;
Whereas Peace Corps volunteers provide an invaluable service to the Nation by 
        working with families and communities around the world to improve health 
        care for children, expand agricultural production, teach in schools, 
        fight HIV and AIDS, protect the environment, and initiate small business 
Whereas the Peace Corps enriches and strengthens the Nation by promoting 
        international peace, cross-cultural awareness, and mutual understanding 
        between the United States and the world; and
Whereas the spirit of service and commitment to helping others is a fundamental 
        component of democracy: Now, therefore, be it
    Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), 
That the Congress--
            (1) recognizes the President's call to double the number of 
        Peace Corps volunteers to almost 15,000 by 2007, as an 
        opportunity to improve understanding between the people of the 
        United States and the world; and
            (2) recognizes the need to double funding for the Peace 
        Corps to $550,000,000 by 2007.
