                         CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

Recognizing the need to double Federal funding for the Peace Corps from
fiscal year 2002 funding levels to $550,000,000 by 2007, and for other
                               purposes.

Whereas on January 29, 2002, the President proposed to double the number of
        Peace Corps volunteers to almost 15,000 by 2007;
Whereas, since 1961, more than 168,000 volunteers have served in the Peace Corps
        in 136 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Central Asia, Eastern
        and Central Europe, and Central and South America;
Whereas Peace Corps volunteers provide an invaluable service to the Nation by
        working with families and communities around the world to improve health
        care for children, expand agricultural production, teach in schools,
        fight HIV and AIDS, protect the environment, and initiate small business
        opportunities;
Whereas the Peace Corps enriches and strengthens the Nation by promoting
        international peace, cross-cultural awareness, and mutual understanding
        between the United States and the world; and
Whereas the spirit of service and commitment to helping others is a fundamental
        component of democracy: Now, therefore, be it
    Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring),
That the Congress--
            (1) recognizes the President's call to double the number of
        Peace Corps volunteers to almost 15,000 by 2007, as an
        opportunity to improve understanding between the people of the
        United States and the world; and
            (2) recognizes the need to double funding for the Peace
        Corps to $550,000,000 by 2007.
