                            JOINT RESOLUTION


 
       Commending the members of the United States Armed Forces.

Whereas the members of the United States Armed Forces have a long history of 
        exceptional service to the country, including valiant heroism in combat;
Whereas members of the United States Armed Forces have for decades served with 
        distinction abroad and in so doing have strengthened alliances between 
        the United States and other countries;
Whereas members of the United States Armed Forces continue to further peace and 
        stability in many regions of the world through contributions to the 
        North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the United Nations;
Whereas since September 11, 2001, members of the United States Armed Forces have 
        promoted homeland security throughout the United States by performing 
        various missions, including providing security at the Nation's airports, 
        protecting the public at special events, and patrolling the Nation's 
        skies with combat air patrols;
Whereas these post-September 11, 2001, missions have been in addition to other 
        regular military missions and have been performed without any increase 
        in the size of the Armed Forces;
Whereas since the commencement of Operation Enduring Freedom, members of the 
        Armed Forces have demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in combating 
        terrorism and in bringing stability to struggling nations like 
        Afghanistan;
Whereas members of the Armed Forces are helping around the world to train the 
        militaries of other nations in counter-terrorism operations;
Whereas members of the Armed Forces even now are serving, in the Persian Gulf, 
        on the Korean peninsula, and elsewhere, as a deterrent to those who 
        might repudiate diplomacy and fail to honor their international 
        commitments;
Whereas the members of the National Guard and Reserve have played integral roles 
        in the performance of every military mission and continue to be critical 
        to the effectiveness of the total force; and
Whereas the ability of members of the Armed Forces to perform their missions 
        requires the support and sacrifice of their families and the commitment 
        to go wherever the Nation needs them: Now, therefore, be it
    Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United 
States of America in Congress assembled, That Congress--
            (1) commends all members of the United States Armed Forces 
        (whether on active duty, in the National Guard, or in the 
        Reserve) for their exemplary service to the Nation in combating 
        terrorism and in preserving peace and stability throughout the 
        world;
            (2) applauds the supportive efforts of the families of 
        members of the Armed Forces in helping to make possible their 
        dedicated service to the Nation; and
            (3) commits itself to supporting the Nation's 
        servicemembers as they carry out the missions to which they are 
        assigned.
